Oh, what a beautiful and sad story all in one - and I love on what a hopeful note it ends! It's almost scary what a good insight it offers into the mind of a man - well, barely more than a boy - whose trauma from the war was further aggravated by the solitary existence in prison. Talking to inanimate objects, hating his family name, losing mind and hope in his injured mind - no wonder that appearance of Hermione, the - well, perhaps not friendly, but not indifferent - face in the blank crowd healers uninterested in helping someone who's found himself on the wrong side of the war. I loved the timeline of 28 days and how Draco gradually keeps waking up, anticipating, hoping, living and falling in love for the one person that seems to care. But he's still a Malfoy, true to his name, and wouldn't just give up his true feelings - but he very much realises they're there, that something is there when he nearly manages to drive her away. He's soon back to counting moments and it makes one realise how fragile his mental health is and how much he came to rely on a little bit attention and care he was given. The moment of meeting his mum is very emotional - it was very moving to watch him fall apart, because when it comes to his mum, he cannot even pretend he doesn't care. I loved the subtlety and the little details that direct and indicate the mood of this story - and I especially liked the way Draco's haunted mind perceived Hermione and how that perception changed and changed him. Brilliant story, I wish it were mine! :)
